Discovering the Oldest House in the Miami Valley

The oldest structure is Newcom’s Tavern, located right in Dayton, Ohio. Built in 1796, it’s not only the oldest house but also the oldest building in the area. Originally, it served as a tavern and a hostel by Colonel George Newcom and his wife, Mary. This place has seen Dayton grow from the ground up!
Now, Newcom’s Tavern was a central hub in the early days. It was Dayton’s first school, church, courthouse, and more. Imagine, for just 65 cents back then, you could get food and lodging for a night, even for your horse!
Over the years, this building has changed hands and purposes, surviving even the great flood of 1913. Thanks to donations and some historical luck, it was preserved and now sits in Carillon Park, where you can visit and feel the history that walls have witnessed.
