Brent’s Smokin’ Butts and Grill in Middletown sits on a spot that means a lot to me personally. Growing up just a few blocks away, I spent many summer mornings at the little yellow building that once stood there—the Sunshine Café. When I was around ten, my best friend Amy and I would walk over with coins and small bills in hand and order eggs and toast like we were two little adults. I’m sure the waitresses thought we were adorable, and looking back, those simple breakfasts became some of my favorite childhood memories.
Sadly, the Sunshine Café was lost to a fire. A new building took its place, and while I can’t remember what opened there at first, I recently returned to the spot—now home to Brent’s Smokin’ Butts and Grill. The moment I pulled into the parking lot, all of those memories came rushing back. It felt full circle in the best way, and the food? Just as comforting.

What started as a small food truck has grown into a full-service restaurant that still feels friendly and down-to-earth. Brent’s menu is all about comfort and crave-worthy flavor. They slow-smoke everything fresh and prep their sides in-house, so every bite feels homemade.
Here’s what stood out during our visit:
- Pulled Pork Sandwich – Piled high, tender, and smoky. A classic done right.
- Beef Brisket – Juicy and full of that rich bark BBQ lovers dream about.
- Jalapeño Cheddar Sausage – Spicy, cheesy, and packed with bold flavor.
- Corn Pudding + Mac & Cheese – The sides aren’t afterthoughts here—they’re stars in their own right.
- Fried Red Potatoes – Crispy outside, fluffy inside. The perfect BBQ companion.
They also do Pork Belly Burnt Ends on weekends—and let me tell you, they’re worth the drive alone.
