I love when a restaurant surprises me—in the best way. That’s exactly what happened the first time I visited Sea Jax Tavern, tucked right off Bigger Road in Kettering. You’d never guess that this relaxed, coastal-inspired spot was once a Pizza Hut. Now it’s serving up some of the tastiest seafood and pub-style comfort food in the Miami Valley.
The Story Behind the Tavern
Owners Ron and Christy Sweeney aren’t new to the restaurant scene. Long before Sea Jax, they were the couple behind Sweeney’s Seafood in Centerville. After selling that spot in 2012, they wanted something a little more laid-back—something that felt like home for their neighbors. Two years later, Sea Jax opened its doors.
Comfort Food with a Coastal Twist
The menu at Sea Jax is full of crowd-pleasers. They’ve taken seafood favorites and given them a fresh, approachable spin. Some must-try items include:
- Boom Boom Shrimp – crispy, spicy, and perfectly sauced
- Fish Tacos – topped with fresh pico, slaw, and their famous Boom Boom sauce
- Shrimp Creole – hearty, flavorful, and served with rice and garlic toast
- The “Buckeye” Burger – piled with cheddar, bacon, BBQ sauce, and a giant onion ring

If you’re into local brews, Sea Jax is your spot. The taps are filled with favorites from Warped Wing, Yellow Springs, Madtree, and more. Not a beer fan? Try one of their house cocktails. The “Bikini Dropper” is my personal pick—it’s fruity, fun, and just strong enough to make you forget you’re not on a beach.
