I call these games adventure games, but the proper term would be thematic. These Adventure and Thematic Games embrace a theme and take you on a journey (usually). However, some of them are more stagnant, meaning they have more standard gameplay, but more often than not, these games are adventurous. For example, Last Friday is a game where one player takes on a Jason Voorhees type of character and attempts to find and murder each player, who are campers, at the camp on the board game. The players are trying to run from this murderous villain. As you can see, the theme is specific and adventurous, good luck and don’t die.

Back to thematic adventure games, these are some of my favorite games to play. However, you should know these games are typically on the longer side of gameplay. Most will require close to 2 hours (or longer) to play. Although this may only be true for some of them, so do your research. The more epic the game, the more fun, so try not to let a 2-hour game stop you from playing it. So, don’t rob yourself or your group of an incredible experience.

Final Thoughts

Below is a list of games that officially fit the thematic adventure games category. However, please note that some may have more elaborate instructions and components. You should plan your games! Please pick a game well before your game night. At least one person needs to be able to explain the game. I recommend hitting up Youtube for instruction videos. Watch It Played is fantastic for directions and instructions. Rodney Smith is very detailed and so helpful!! Understanding how a game works and the rules you must follow before you begin playing would be best. Nothing loses people faster than waiting for someone to figure out the instructions. I know it sounds like a lot of work, but trust me, it’s well worth it! Pick a game, learn how to play, and play. It’s that simple. Once you’re done and the adventure is over, remember to come back and tell us about your experience! Browse other Board Game Categories Here.
